Quality Life
जे अणण्णदंसी से अणण्णारामे, जे अणण्णारामे से अणण्णदंसी ।
- Shree Acharang Sutra| Adhyayan 2 | Uddeshak 6
Meaning:
The one who does not focus on others is the one who can focus on his own soul. And the one who is stable in their true self shall never have an eye for others’ shortcomings.
Interpretation:
Everyone wishes to attain the best in life. Even after acquiring all the best things in life, it does not guarantee a best quality life.
We have limited years to live. Bhagwan Mahavir has shown us a way to make the most of it, by explaining, the one who does not focus on others’ shortcomings, is the one who can be with his soul. Every success requires hardwork, and for consistent hardwork to pay off, it requires time. One who can give time to himself, can explore his true self. One who recognises his true self, can also recognise his good and bad qualities. Recognising the bad qualities is the first step towards purity. The one’s whose journey has begun on the path of virtuousness, spontaneously develop good qualities. And their life becomes the best quality life.
When a person walking on the road does not concentrate on the path but remains immersed in sight-seeing here and there, increases the chances of a mishap. Likewise, when a person only concentrates on others’ mistakes, he can create a benevolent life for himself.
If you die with the same bad qualities that you’re born with, it is a life not lived well. But when your virtues are enhanced and vices are destroyed, it is a sign of a meaningful and well-lived life. That is what we call a quality life.
Turning away your focus from others, and reinstating focus on your own self is the message from the Jain Aagams.
