Rectification of Mistakes
ण तेसु कुज्झे ण य पव्वहेज्जा, ण यावि किंचि फरुसं वएज्जा ।
तहा करिस्संति पडिस्सुणेज्जा, सेयं खु मेयं ण पमाय कुज्जा ॥
-Shree Suyagadang Sutra | Adhyayan 14 | Gatha 9
Meaning:
We must never get angry on someone who corrects our mistakes, neither should we utter hurtful and harsh words to them. Instead, resolve to follow the instructions and guidance given in the future. Offer a heartfelt Micchami Dukkadam (apology) for your misbehaviour, and take the condemnation with the spirit that it’s for your own well-being, to avoid further negligence.
Interpretation:
Sometime or the other, everyone in this world is prone to make mistakes. But unfortunately, everyone does not learn from their mistakes. How can you correct your mistakes and convert you past into a better present?
Giving a solution for this Bhagwan Mahavir has explained, “When a person points out your mistakes, do not let anger and hatred take over you. A person filled with ego is the one who will not accept their mistakes. And ego makes us miss the opportunity of improving ourselves.”
The one who can keep their ego in check and can thank the one who corrects their mistake and say, ‘In the future, I will take care and improve myself as per your advice’, only they can upgrade their lives. Only the one who can make such a commitment, can understand and improve their mistakes. This commitment shows respect and appreciation of the well- wisher who has made you realise your mistake. It also encourages your well-wisher to correct you the next time, opening up your own doors for growth and improvement. After acceptance of the fault, one should offer heartfelt Micchami Dukkadam (genuine apology). When one condemns their own mistake positively, they never tend to repeat that mistake again. Everyone will accept their mistakes after arguing or getting sad or upset, but the one who accepts it positively is the one who can strive for betterment. And only he can upgrade himself. This is what the Jain Aagams summarise.
